Leduc Minor Softball offers Winter training for U11/U13 and U15/U17. We recognize that so many of our athletes are in dual tracks and their winter sports keep them super busy. This year we decided to reduce winter ball into one day a week training to support our multisport athletes.
Players do not need to be a member of Leduc Minor Softball to attend our winter training, and you do not need to be in our competitive stream. This is for all players that want extra training opportunities. This training encompass 18 hours of training per session and are hosted by our fantastic Jets coaches, as well as specialty guest coaches that will enhance our athletes development. These sessions focus on general skill, hitting, throwing, catching the ball, plays, strategy, and more. We saw huge growth in our players with this opportunity.
We also host pitching and catching clinics. Last year we hosted a 6 week pitching sessions where 20 of our Jets athletes are training with Glenn Jevne, 4 time National Champion, 19 time Provincial Champion, Pan Am Games gold medalist, and World Softball Bronze medalist
We have paired with Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and their Personal Trainer program to run a practicum with SRTraining in Leduc. Our practicum student, Sophie attended our winter training sessions (under the oversight of Shawn Raymond) to ensure that we are supporting our athletes in being well rounded and supporting their development. They are focusing on strength and conditioning and injury prevention. They spend 3 hours a Sunday with our 75 athletes that train that day. They will also be working with each one of our teams from U9-U19 when our indoor training starts in April.
Our association provides indoor training for all athletes starting April 1 each year. This team based training enables each player to start to work on their skills earlier, prior to our very short season starting. These are fully equipped session and are held in 5 different locations around Leduc. Our players get 2-5 hours per week of training to support their season and this is for all skill level players and team divisions.
We have an internal leadership program where players can receive their families volunteer credits by coaching a young age category. We believe that the foundation of support for each player is enhanced by having role models in place to mentor the athletes.
Our coaches are provided with training plans created by our development director to focus on a consistent and scalable approach for the players. We have further enhanced this by focusing on coach development this year and ensuring that they have all the supports to support the athletes.
Softball Canada’s Athlete Development Matrix (ADM) is a document to help guide coaches and steer the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) content. It lays out in great detail what a player should be able to do at each stage of their Long-Term Athlete Development. Softball’s ADM tries to ensure that players do not miss critical skills early in learning the game –therefore leading to more successful softball development. Leduc MInor Softball will support these Softball Canada lead initatives in developing our players. Read more here: ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT MATRIX
